Do you feel THIS is the moment to reflect on your career? That you need it to reflect and dig deeper into your inner self? You want to find out what’s in your heart and mind? What is it that you really want to change in your life or career? I think at least 95% of your day to day work should be fun for you! If this is not the case, perhaps it is time for reflection, right here, right now, to make the change you want to. If you want it or not: reflection time has started!
It is natural in this time of the year to look back and reflect on the time behind us, to make visible what’s in your mind and in your heart. Next to this, astrologist tell us that Mercurius is running retrograde, which means our communications turns more inside. Which means we need more attention for our own inner self.
Reflection opens the door to change. You must first slow down and stand still before you can change direction. Agree?
We spend a lot of time at work during our lives, this one reason why careers are an obvious subject to reflect on once in a while. If you are on the hunt for a job, really, really want to return to your career after a GAP or are redesigning your career, reflection is a thing you can do regularly to find out if you are still on the right track. If you want to make chance in your career in 2018, please take the time that is given to you now and use it for reflection. How to do this?
There are several ways to do this. But reflection is always about looking back, observing and analyzing. And it is about looking ahead, looking back can help you to decide what is good to do next. It helps you to focus on the bigger picture, to face your fears, notice your (positive and negative) patterns. Let me tell you what works for me, perhaps you can use this methods to find your own right way for reflection time.
Reflection to me is like a “meeting with myself” or it is about just taking a moment to do nothing at all: Just stare out the window a bit or sit in the park listing to nature. What has been the last time you did nothing at all? Really nothing? It helps me to really stand still and see what is there and totally be in the moment. It helps me to get some silence in my head. To stop my brain from working overtime.
A “meeting with myself” looks like this: I sit down with a good cup of tea (I don’t drink coffee), silence, a notebook and a pen for about 30 minutes and ask myself questions like:
- How am I feeling?
- How is my energy?
- What progress did I make? (I reflect on this on a daily basis)
- What did I do lately that I really loved? (and want to do more of!)
- What did I learn? (I reflect on this on a daily basis too)
- What do I really want to let go?
- Where do I want to align to the coming period?
- What’s the next step I want to take?
Recently I read “I shouldn’t be telling you this” written by Kate White – authority on bigger, better and bolder careers – and found out she does regular meetings with herself too. It helps her to look at the bigger picture. If walking the dog or stroll down the beach works better for you, go ahead and do it! Find out what works best for you!
Do you have ongoing activity in your head, you feel like your brain is working overtime and your life is so busy that you have trouble to slow down and stand still? And you really feel the need to slow down and reflect? Well, get your agenda right now and see which things you want to skip and immediately act on it. Now you have created the time to slow down and sit down. I recently read this column about people who spent Christmas on their own. And they love it. If this is what you feel you have to do, do it!
I like reflection time! It helps me to feel what is in my mind and what is my heart. As a firm believer that trusting your gut instincts makes your biggest dreams and desires come true, I need this reflection time. Why? To find out that my actions still align with those gut feelings and instincts and my big dreams. Like stated in the former paragraph, it helps me to slow down, to stand still, to see the bigger picture and feel if I need to adjust or change my direction.
Reflection time is taking good care of yourself. Taking good care of yourself is the first step forward in your person growth. We all know the phrase: “You have to take care of yourself, nobody else is going to do it!” So do you take good care of yourself?
The inspiration for this blog came while shopping for some office supplies. I unexpectedly ran into this super cute little notebook ”book for making lists of things on your mind and in your heart.” And I immediately bought it to give to one of my friends, this was a book made especially for her! After I gave it to her, she immediately said: “You should write a blog about it! ” and voila, here it is. The notebook is all about reflection, it has pages that state: “My big plan(s) for the future”, “things that I’m proud of”, “famous people I would stalk if given the chance” and “things I have yet to learn”. A very good start to have your first meeting with yourself!
I am curious how you handle reflection and invite to share your thoughts on this subject beneath this blog. How do you handle reflection? Do you do this regularly? If you connect to this subject and feel NOW is the time to make change, I invite you to take the next step and slow down.
